"Ryu is one of the most recognizable characters in, not just Street Fighter, but gaming as a whole. When it comes to the genre of fighting games he is very much the measuring stick for gameplay strengths and weaknesses. It goes without saying that his design, personality, and moves have inspired numerous concepts of characters for various titles throughout the years. Personality-wise, he represents the romanticized Japanese warrior that offers few words, but shows great honor in battle and has an innate sense of justice despite struggling with his own inner demon."
Adopted by the master Gouken as a young boy, Ryu was raised with a great appreciation for the martial arts and inundated its teachings into every aspect of what he knew of life. He even met his lifelong best friend and rival Ken thanks to it. Ryu is a fighting prodigy who shows incredible unknown potential, but that blessing can also be a double-edged sword which could lead him to terrible power if his ambition is left unchecked. Because of an unyielding commitment to be the best, especially within the particular art whose teachings he yearns to master, there are times when a wicked energy called Satsui no Hado threatens to consume him. A murderous intent that could rob him of his very humanity. He walks that fatal line every single day in pursuit of the dream in being the best martial artist he can be. But even with the curse of that dark hado looming over him he shoulders that burden and fights on. Despite a mysterious criminal orginization wanting to seize him for nefarious ends he steels himself against the coming storm and fights on. No matter how many other fighters around the world that want to step forward and defeat this young legend, Ryu rises to the challenge and fights on; facing every obstacle on the path to his destiny. A wandering warrior who ever embodies the Sun-Tzu teaching 風林火山 "Move as swift as a wind, stay as silent as a forest, attack as fierce as fire, undefeatable defense like a mountain." There's always a battle to be better than what we are in the struggle to overcome our own limitations and the opponents life throws at us. As the premiere Street Fighter that all others are and forever will be compared to, Ryu not only knows this... he lives it.
