"E. Honda represents one of the first sumo wrestlers in fighting games. Unbelievably agile for a fighter his size, the character has had some terrific matches in tournaments everywhere. His trap style and throws make him incredibly dangerous once he locks you in a corner. Many opponents catch those hundred hands till this day."
In Japan amidst a large crowd, a small boy sits enraptured with eyes fixed on a sacred ring. He waits in unbearable anticipation for what he sees as an ancient battle ready to begin. When it finally happens it startles him like a crack of thunder as two gigantic men lurch forward charging into each other with a deep slap like a pair of titans colliding. Muscle and fat ripple across their carefully crafted bodies kicking up sand and salt in their wake. Hands trying to find leverage, to deflect, grab, pull, strike, and push the other off their feet out of the dohyō (ring) that they aim to claim for victory. A technical display in “striking one another,” but with a simple timeless message: "Dig in and dominate to win." This in essence, was what a young Edmond Honda saw as 相撲 sumo. He knew that day, in that moment, that he couldn't wish for a greater inspiration in his eyes or in his heart. The way of sumo was the life for him. However, being so small and, worst of all skinny, little Edmond had a long hard road ahead of him. But nothing was going to stop him. He was going to be the greatest sumo wrestler ever and he knew of only one way to get started on his path of domination, so he dug in. Eating and exercising every day then eating even more he studied the greats, their habits, their techniques, and even how they carried themselves. Edmond soaked it all up like a bathhouse sponge never satisfied until he could be bigger and better each day than he was before. Little by little he gained ground. Regardless of the pain, he pulled himself up and pushed his body beyond its limits, including past its once frail proportions, to transform himself into a true specimen of the sport. He even earned himself a spot in a respected sumo stable with his magnificent size, uncanny agility, and determination. There his regiment became even more finely tuned. When he was finally put into competition, the rookie rikishi E. Honda quickly began to dominate the sport’s scene he adored. Fans flocked to his matches wanting to see his battles and immediately fell in love with how good-natured this big dominant man was to everyone. After all the years of digging in deep through the blood and the sweat, to pay his dues to the way of sumo, he was finally granted the high title of ōzeki. He was so proud he almost cried in his acceptance speech and the people who witnessed it nearly teared up out of joy and respect for him. But Honda also knew he could be even better. His main goal wasn't just to achieve the great rank of yokozuna after all, but to be one of the greatest ever. With that goal in mind he came to have a personal desire to spread sumo to a wider audience; wanting every one in the world to enjoy the greatness of this nation's sport and prove to fighters everywhere that they were a force to be reckoned with. He had heard his share of unbelievers; most of them represented other martial arts, thinking they were superior to his beloved sumo. Oh they’re going to find out just how wrong they were. He had made a solemn vow early on that once he reached this point of ōzeki he was going to put off trying to achieve the most honored rank of yokozuna for just a little while longer. There was one more push he wanted to earn for that title and almost like a divine sign the opportunity revealed itself in a sealed envelope addressed to him. A letter that included an invitation to a world martial arts tournament. One to prove the best warrior in the world...no matter the discipline. The goal in front of him was almost within striking distance and, in his heart, the will to dominate pounded ever stronger for the now powerful sumo wrestler known as E. Honda. With a big smile spreading across his face he knew just what that meant: ‘Time to dig in.’
